Deep Dive: R.E.M. Life’s Rich Pageant

After R.E.M. released Fables, they balanced between their Southern base and their newly found national attention.  Life’s Rich Pageant placed the Athens band firmly in the spotlight.  The guys headed to John Mellencamp’s studio in Indiana.  Don Gehman produced, helping them put both feet in the rock camp, no longer moody and obscure.

Life’s Rich Pageant‘s songs remain staples of alternative and classic rock stations.  They continued their visual art collaborations with friends.  In further music and art connection with Athens’ buds, Brant Slay illustrated some of the packaging.  While Slay may not be readily familiar to general audiences, his duo, Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, became one of Michael Stipe’s early proteges.  As an aside for ultra-fans of Athens music, the Pupps have newly recorded music that will probably get released.  They also played a house concert for my xx’th birthday here in South Carolina!

Gotta keep something obscure for R.E.M. die-hards!
