One of my family’s favorite places in the Midlands is Poinsett State Park near Sumter.  Poinsett is a great place for a picnic, hike, camping, or mountain biking.  The trails are well-marked (except for this one spot on Scout Trail, where I get lost every time) and cleared.  They are unpaved, natural ground.

You can also rent canoes or paddle boats on the pond, as well as party shelters near bathrooms.  There’s quiet tent camping, too.

Within an hour of Columbia, Poinsett makes for an easy local adventure to get outside.  The SC State Parks have an Ultimate Outsider stamp collection.  When you visit each of our state parks, stop by the visitors center and get your stamp!
