Deep Dive: Stephen Stills

According to Laurel Canyon legend, Cass Elliott (Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas) introduced Stephen Stills to Graham Nash at a party. Stills had already been in Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young. Soon after, he connected with David Crosby after Crosby was booted from the Byrds. Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and later, Young) elevated the popularity his other work of the same era.
Stills and songwriter Judy Collins lived together off and on for a few years, mutual inspiring and infuriating each other. Perhaps his most known CSN song celebrates Collins, “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” In 2017, the two reunited for an album, Everybody Knows. The duo recorded songs they wrote, and those of their friends Bob Dylan, Sandy Denny, and more.
